Sergey G. Inge-Vechtomov,

Dr. Sci., professor, full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences

Editor-in-Chief

Department of Genetics and Biotichnology, St. Petersburg State University

Research interests:

Professor Sergey Inge-Vechtomov heads the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology at St. Petersburg State University and St. Petersburg branch of N.I.Vavilov Institute of General Genetics. The department is recognized as one of the most significant centers of Genetics in Russia. It provides several educational programs for bachelor and master degrees. Moreover the Department [of Genetics and Biotechnology] is well known as a research center which has a developed scientific school with strong traditions. There are several major directions of research at the department: physiological genetics, plant genetics, animal genetics, gene and cellular engineering of plants and biochemical genetics.  Together with St. Petersburg branch of N.I.Vavilov Institute of General Genetics, Department of Genetics is a main part of Research and Education Center on Molecular Biology for Human and Environmental Health in Northwest Russia. Sergey Inge-Vechtomov is an author of more than 250 scientific publications including text-books for students.

Personal research interests of prof.  Inge-Vechtomov include: molecular and general genetics: genetic control of protein biosynthesis, fidelity of genetic code translation, genetics of microorganisms: yeast Saccharomyces, yeast prions, ecological genetics, genetic toxicology and history of genetics. Most important findings made under S. Inge-Vechtomov’s guidance lie in the field of genetic control of protein synthesis. He has identified for the first time the genes SUP35 and SUP45 which encode interacting translation termination factors. In following research prof. Inge-Vechtomov has proved that yeast prion [PSI] is a conformational isomer of the Sup35 translation termination factor. Sergey Inge-Vechtomov did a significant impact into ecological genetics by inventing a new test-system for genetic toxicology. The test-system named the alpha-test allows scoring a wide broad of genetic changes such as chromosome and chromosome arm loss, recombination, gene conversion, gene mutations and primary lesions of genetic material.
